How to Assess the Quality of Cut Steel Plate Parts by Examining the Cut Surface
Start with the drag lines. These vertical or slightly curved ridges running down the cut face are normal in thermal cutting, but their shape reveals plenty. Clean, fine lines with a gentle backward curve indicate the cutting speed was properly matched to the material. Jagged, irregular grooves suggest instability—possibly from worn linear guides, loose drive belts, or fluctuating gas pressure. Straight vertical lines that run perfectly perpendicular often mean the speed was a touch slow, over-burning the edge. The goal is consistency across the entire thickness.
Next, check the top edge. A sharp, crisp upper corner with no rounding or melting means the pierce and lead-in were handled correctly. If the top edge looks washed out or melted away, you are probably looking at excessive preheat, poor focus positioning, or a pierce that lingered too long in one spot. On laser-cut stainless, a clean top edge with no discoloration signals good nitrogen purge.
Run your finger along the bottom edge—carefully, if the part is fresh off the table. A slight burr that snaps off with light thumb pressure is acceptable and common. Heavy, fused-on dross that resists removal tells a different story. It points to parameters that need tuning: speed adjustments, gas pressure tweaks, or simply a nozzle that has seen better days.
Cut face color offers clues too. On mild steel cut with oxygen, a dark blue to charcoal gray surface with minimal oxidation suggests proper settings. A heavily oxidized, blackened face usually means too much heat. On stainless cut with nitrogen, a bright silver edge indicates good purge; straw or blue discoloration hints at oxygen contamination or insufficient gas coverage.
Kerf width consistency wraps up the inspection. A uniform kerf from top to bottom and around complex contours shows that the machine maintained proper standoff and energy density throughout. Tapered or wandering kerfs point toward focus issues or motion system problems that need attention before they scrap expensive material.
